2023/12/19

The Jockey Club Community Care and STEM in Action Project held its Product Presentation Ceremony on December 19, 2023.

The entire project involved the design of 21 innovative products. Among them, four products have successfully been selected for mass production, including 85 sets of 輔助萬用餐具, 3 sets of Moderators, 60 sets of 火警安全感應器, and 60 units of Hale-ware. These products will be donated to social service organizations. Through this product donation, students’ creations aim to bring more care to the community. The innovative products are intended to sustainably assist every individual in need.

2023/10/14

The Jockey Club Community Care and STEM in Action Project held its closing ceremony on October 14, 2023.

The 21 products were exhibited in a display area at the ceremony, were the students introduced their features, demonstrated how they work and shared their experiences of building them. The students’ remarkable creations covered various aspects of life, including clothing, food, housing, transportation and entertainment, with a diverse range of functions and an emphasis on ease of use. Beneficiaries included elderly people, visually impaired individuals, hearing-impaired individuals, wheelchair users, residents of social co-housing, and those living in confined spaces. The team from Carmel Holy Word Secondary School created the Railway Safety Device for the Hearing-impaired, which uses flashing lights to assist hearing-impaired individuals to avoid accidents involving train doors. The team from Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School designed Hale-Ware, and the team from Pentecostal Holiness Church Wing Kwong College designed the Smart Dining Assistant product, both aimed at allowing individuals with limb disabilities or those in other forms of physical need to dine more easily.

On 17 December 2022, students in Phase III of the “Mentorship Programme” from Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School and Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College visited two enterprises, Farm66 and Tool and Mold Hong Kong Ltd (TNM). Farm66 is a local indoor organic farming enterprise dedicated to providing high-quality, eco-organic, and healthy agricultural products. During the visit, students learned about Farm66’s utilization of high-tech and innovative technologies to achieve organic agricultural production for sustainable development. TNM Factory is a professional mold factory equipped with advanced production equipment and technologies. Students had the opportunity to learn about the automated production process and the application of the latest technology in the mold-making industry.

Over the past three years, The Jockey Club Community Care and STEM in Action Project, funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has produced fruitful results. Six secondary schools, including Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School, Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School, PHC Wing Kwong College, Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College, Carmel Holy Word Secondary School, and Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School, have successfully developed 21 technological products designed for disadvantaged groups. The project was aided by student mentors from CUHK’s Faculty of Engineering, social service organisations, and entrepreneurs. The project results and products were showcased at the Learning and Teaching Expo 2022 held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 7-9 December 2022. Moreover, the project team and students from the participating schools participated in the InnoSTEMer Seminar and Showcase, where teaching professionals and the public learned about the students’ learning process during the project.

The Proposal Selection Day of Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School was held on 2 August 2022. Upon completing Phase I of the project, the students used the knowledge they learned from STEM Education, Social Service Education, and Proposal to design products for the visually impaired, physically handicapped persons or the elderly, and write a proposal plan. A total of 30 proposals were compiled for the panel of judges to select on the Proposal Selection Day. Ten out of 30 product proposals were selected for Phase II ‘Maker Education’ to create prototypes. The visually impaired ambassador of the Hong Kong Blind Union and the ambassador of Direction Association For The Handicapped were invited to be one of the judges, to ensure that the selected product designs meet the needs of users.

The Proposal Selection Day for Carmel Holy Word Secondary School was held on 25 July 2022. After completing Phase I of the project, students utilized the knowledge they learned from STEM Education, Social Service Education, and Proposal Writing to design products for the hearing impaired or elderly, and then submitted a proposal plan. A total of 30 proposals were compiled for the panel of judges to evaluate on Proposal Selection Day. Ten out of the 30 product proposals were selected for Phase II of the project, ‘Maker Education’, where students will create prototypes. To ensure that the selected product designs meet the needs of users, the Hearing Impaired Ambassador of the Silence Pak Tin Integrated Service Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was invited to be one of the judges.

The Proposal Selection Day for Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College was held on July 14 2022. After completing Phase I of the project, students used knowledge gained from STEM Education, Social Service Education, and Proposal Writing to design products for the visually impaired or elderly and write proposal plans. A total of 31 proposals were compiled for the panel of judges to select on the Proposal Selection Day. Ten outstanding product proposals were chosen from the 31 to proceed to Phase II of the project, known as “Maker Education,” where prototypes will be produced. The Hong Kong Blind Union’s visually impaired ambassador was invited to participate in the judging process to ensure that the product designs met the users’ needs.

The Proposal Selection Day for PHC Wing Kwong College was held on 6 July 2022. After completing Phase I of the project, the second cohort of students used their knowledge from STEM Education, Social Service Education, and Proposal Writing to develop product designs for physically handicapped individuals or the elderly, and drafted proposal plans. A total of 30 proposals were submitted for the judging panel’s consideration on Proposal Selection Day. Ten proposals were selected to advance to Phase II, ‘Maker Education,’ where students will create prototypes. To ensure that the selected product designs meet the needs of users, the judging panel invited an ambassador from the Direction Association For The Handicapped to participate in the selection process.

The Proposal Selection Day of Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School was held on 5 July 2022. After completing Phase I of the project, the second cohort of students utilized the knowledge they acquired from STEM Education, Social Service Education, and Proposal Writing Lesson to design products and write proposal for the visually impaired or the elderly. A total of 29 proposals were compiled for the panel of judges to select on the Proposal Selection Day. Ten excellent product proposals out of the 29 were selected to enter Phase II, “Maker Education,” for making prototypes. To ensure that the selected product designs can better meet the needs of users, the Hong Kong Blind Union’s visually impaired ambassador was invited to be one of the judges.

The ambassadors of the Direction Association for the Handicapped were invited to take part in the Phase III NGO focus group of PHC Wing Kwong College on 25 June 2022. During the session, the students introduced the design and usage of their products to the ambassadors. After trying them out, the ambassadors provided suggestions for improvement.

Learning and Teaching Expo 2021 has been conducted at the 3CDE Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 8-10 December 2021 (Wednesday to Friday). Jockey Club Community Care and STEM in Action Project had been one of the exbitors participated in booth exhibition, Future Learning Theatre and InnoSTEMer, which enabled the public to experience and know more about the journey of our project.

In the course “Teaching and Learning with Information and Communication Technology” of Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programme, the project members shared with the course participants the content of STEM Education, rationale and design of Maker Education implementation and Social Service Education, and modes of cross-disciplinary collaboration. By displaying teaching materials and achievements and conducting simulated teaching, the project members had an-depth discussion with the participants about promoting STEM Education.

A seminar was organised on 30 September 2021 to introduce the project and achievements to the colleagues in the education sector.

The details of “IT in Education Blended Learning Series: How to Promote STEM Education in the Pandemic with the Blended Teaching Mode”were:
1. Share the integration of STEM Education, Maker Education and Social Service Education to promote STEM Education curriculum in schools;
2. Introduce IT tools and platforms for teaching, learning and assessment;
3. Discuss with pioneering teachers on teaching, preparation and responses to challenges brought by the pandemic; and
4. Conduct a simulated lesson in blended mode for participants to master the skills of virtual teaching, designing interactive online lessons and maintaining good teaching quality

A webinar was organised on 16 April 2021 to introduce the project and share its achievements to the colleagues in the education sector. Details of “2020/21 Webinars by IT in Education of Education Bureau – IT in Education Subject-related Series: Curriculum design and implementation for STEM Education” were:

  1. Introduce curriculum design and implementation for STEM Education, share how to promote STEM curriculum in schools through integration of STEM Education, Maker Education and Social Service Education.
  2. Share classroom practice, teaching material examples and achievements, and application of e-Learning platforms, including:
    • Various learning modes and activities: Share implementation of various STEM teaching modes (such as face-to-face teaching and online teaching), and how to use different teaching activities (online interaction, breakout rooms in video conference, flipped classroom and experience activity, etc.) to increase learning motivation, and to lead students to design products and create product prototypes, etc.
    • Assessment and feedback on learning: Use diverse forms of assessment to conduct timely assessment, including written and video proposals, lesson reflection and group presentation, etc., and e-Learning platforms to evaluate students’ progress and provide feedback.
    • E-learning: Share how to leverage e-Learning platforms to implement simultaneous online and offline learning modes. In STEM Education, different e-Learning platforms are taught such as “TinkerCAD circuit” for circuit simulation, “Thunkable” for APP development, “IFTTT” for automation and “Blynk APP” for Internet of Things (IoT) development. E-classroom, videos and exercises as well as other e-Learning platforms (Quizziz, Edpuzzle and Jamboard, etc.) are introduced to promote self-learning and make online lessons more interactive.
  3. Discuss with the pioneering school teachers on preparation and teaching details, and responses to challenges brought by the pandemic.

After completing the first phase of the project, students from Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School used the knowledge acquired from STEM Education, Social Service Education and proposal writing workshops to brainstorm products and write proposals in groups. With 30 proposals collected in the first phase, the panel committee in the proposal selection meeting graded the proposals in respect of aim, function and manufacturing feasibility, etc. and chose 10 outstanding designs for the second phase of the project: “Maker Education”.

Funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and spearheaded by Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Jockey Club Community Care and STEM in Action Project was launched in January 2020. Pioneering this project in the first cohort is Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School. This project aims at increasing the opportunities for students and schools to apply the latest STEM knowledge and skills to the community, instilling a sense of social responsibility in students via a quadripartite professional partnership between the University, schools, social service organisations and enterprises, and inspiring the participating students to continue innovating new products for the community in future. Piloted in six secondary schools, this three-year project will witness the birth of 300 product ideas, 100 prototypes and 20 products.
